Police in Rwamagana District, on August 26, arrested one Francois Tuyambaze, 56, for allegedly distilling illicit gin commonly known as Kanyanga.
The suspect was arrest in Bicaca Cell of Karenge Sector during a Police operation to crackdown on drug dealers, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Eastern Region Police Spokesperson, said.
Tuyambaze was at the time of his arrest found in possession of 35 liters of Kanyanga, which he had already distilled.
“He was caught red-handed distilling kanyanga Police also confiscated several equipment including drums, pipes and raw materials he was using to distill the psychotropic substances,” CIP Kanamugire said.
He attributed the arrest to residents who called the Police and reported Tuyambaze’s “criminal business.”
According to CIP Kanamugire, similar operation was on the same day conducted in Mahama Sector in Kirehe District where Police impounded 200 liters of illicit brew.
The locally made illicit brew commonly known in the area as Umuzefaniya, was immediately disposed of in presence of area residents. The dispose of exercise also served as a moment for Police and local leaders to raise awareness against the vice and to call for continued partnership against drug dealers.
