Police in Nyarugenge District arrested two people for allegedly impersonating traffic Police officers with intent to defraud people.
Jean Bosco Hakizimana, 31, and Emmanuel Ngabirinze, 43, were arrested Friday while receiving the second installment, which was part of the money they had demanded from a motorcyclist.
Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Chief Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi, said that the duo guised as traffic Police officers, and approached the victim promising to bail his motorcycle, which was impounded recently over traffic related offences.
“They reached out to the motorcyclist telling him that they are Police officers attached to the Department of Traffic and Road Safety, and that they are in position to have his motorcycle released,” CIP Kayigi said.
“They asked him money in order to help him, the victim got suspicious and decided to inform the Police anti-corruption unit. They were arrested red-handed receiving the second installment,” Kayigi added. They had already taken Rwf70, 000 from the victim.
He appealed to the general public to desist from such criminal behaviours of soliciting or giving bribes, and report anyone they suspect to be engaged in similar criminal dealings.
